Quick Response to Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak Is Critical

Legionella Outbreak Response

A Legionnaires' Disease Outbreak is when two or more people have contracted the disease from the same location at about the same time. An outbreak in a hospital or long-term care facility is especially serious since 25% of those who get the disease from a health care facility will die.

If you have an outbreak:

  1. Immediately take steps to prevent residents, employees, and/or visitors from inhaling (aerosolized water) or drinking any water from your facility’s water systems until the source of the Legionella bacteria has been identified
  2. Get trained professionals, like Solid Blend Technologies or another Legionella expert, involved to start appropriate detection and remediation activities right away
  3. Follow your Water Management Plan, if you have one (see Legionella Control for more information)

Water systems that could be infected include but are not limited to:

  • Potable water outlets - note: potable (drinking) water sources account for 2/3 of health care-associated outbreaks
    • Faucets or taps
    • Showers
    • Ice machines
    • Misters
  • Whirlpool spas, hot tubs or hydrotherapy pools
  • Evaporative condensers
  • Humidifiers / nebulizers
    • Bubblers for oxygen
    • Water used for respiratory therapy equipment
  • Decorative fountains
  • Potable water systems
    • Incoming water main
    • Water softeners
    • Holding tanks, cisterns
    • Water heaters or hot water holding tanks
  • Cooling towers
  • Irrigation equipment
  • Fire sprinkler systems
